Dr. Roberto Troya

Dr. Roberto Troya of Quito, Ecuador is WWF’s Vice President and Regional Director of Latin America and the Caribbean. Skilled in international conservation policy, with strong fundraising and management experience as well as a broad LAC regional conservation background. Before joining WWF, Dr. Troya was Director of International Government Relations at The Nature Conservancy, a position from which he led TNC's policy initiatives globally. This role included increasing public funding for TNC projects around the world; leading TNC's involvement in important international policy initiatives such as Biodiversity and Climate COP meetings; and strengthening relationships with global institutions like the World Bank, the IADB, CAF, OTCA and others. From 2004 to 2006 he was TNC's Director of External Affairs for South America and from 1996 to 2004 he was Director of the Ecuador Program. Under Dr. Troya’s leadership, the Quito Water User Fees Fund (FONAG) was created, which is now a model for valuing water and payments for ecosystem services. Between 94-96 he served at the Environmental Advisory Commission to the President of Ecuador where he led the creation of the National Environmental Fund. Earlier, he was Executive Director of Fundación Natura, a leading conservation organization and WWF Associate Organization in his native country of Ecuador. He received Master’s Degree (LL.M). from Harvard University Law School (emphasis on environmental law) and a Dr. degree. from the Law School at the Catholic University of Ecuador where he taught environmental law. He did post-graduate studies at Harvard University and the Center for Applied Studies in International Negotiations, Geneva, and several courses on Strategic and Operational Planning including a high level Executive Education Program at the FUQUA Business School at Duke University and three high level executive “Leading at the Top” course at IMD International Business School in Lausanne, Geneva. Most recently he has joined Peter Senge (MIT) and Otto Scharmer on “Theory U” based courses for executive leaders.
